Having been a King James user all of my adult life, and most of my childhood since I could read, I’ve known this sacred book well. (57+ years) I also know that there are words in the King James English that make those less familiar with it, scratch their heads! It’s quite frankly because they’re unfamiliar with these terms.
And there are those out there that are passing themselves off as experts on the KJV, when they probably wouldn’t know a quintessential KJV verse if it bit them on the backside. They’re passing these verses off as supernatural changes when they aren’t. So, for my own conscience sake, I’m going to list them here just so you’ll know.
If you’re wanting to understand the actual changes, quit comparing the King James Bible’s terminology with the new perversions of the Word, and start looking for actual residue. Because this is happening, I have no doubt this list will continue to grow as time goes on.
For clarity, I’ll highlight the misunderstood terms in lime green. If an Explanation is given, it’s in red.
Genesis 40:1 And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt. (KJV)
- Butler was a proper term for personal servant, or cup bearer.
Exodus 8:3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs: (KJV)
- Ovens never was a change. What? Did they not bake bread in ovens in Moses’ day? That’s plumb silly to mark this as a Bible change.
Exodus 28:33 And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about: (KJV)
- Why is it so surprising that the image of pomegranate fruit would be woven into the veil?
Leviticus 2:4 And if thou bring an oblation of a meat offering baken in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil. (KJV)
- Oven never was a change. (see Exodus 8:3)
1 Kings 14:10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone. - The Bible has always been very explicit about it’s terms. Dung and pisseth are no exceptions.
2 Kings 18:27 But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? (KJV) EVIDENCE LINK
- The Bible has always been very explicit about it’s terms. Dung and piss are no exceptions.
1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him. 16:15 And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. 16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
- An evil spirit, simply meaning a spirit that troubles. The only reason I know this one, is when I was a young man, I questioned my pastor about it.
2 Samuel 18:27 And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings. (KJV)
- Me thinketh, or me thinks was a very common term when the KJV was translated. You’ll see it in many of the literary works of the era like Shakespeare.
Ezra 9:8 And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage. (KJV)
- It simply means; for a little time (space), God gave me what I didn’t deserve (grace). It has nothing to do with grace from space.
Job 30:27 My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me. (KJV)
- What, you’ve never had an industrial strength belly ache?
Job 33:20 So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. (KJV)
- Abhorreth means a great dislike, and dainty meats are good tasting foods.
Psalms 71:6 By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee. (KJV)
- Holden up means held up, or supported, and mothers bowels is mamma’s belly (the womb).
Isaiah 16:11 Wherefore my bowels shall sound like an harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kirharesh. (KJV)
- Bowels, and inward parts are both the same. I would seem, as it’s always seemed, that the translators wanted to avoid repetition in the sentence.

Jeremiah 8:17 For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the Lord. (KJV)
- A cockatrice is/was a venomous snake (Cobra). But there’s a supernatural change involved here. It’s not in the verse its self though. It’s in today’s definition of what the cockatrice is. It’s defined as a mythical beast, essentially a two-legged dragon with a rooster’s head. This was a big surprise to me when I looked it up to verify my memory.
Daniel 9:9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him; (KJV)
- Not a misspelling for the day it was penned.
Matthew 14:8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger. (KJV)
- A charger is a large dish, plate, or platter.
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (KJV)
- Whatsoever isn’t a foreign term and was proper in the day of the King James translation. I don’t understand why it’s mistaken as one. And alway is exactly the same as always. No difference.
Luke 17:31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. (KJV)
- I learned this term when I was a preteen from my grandfather. Someone would ask him how it goes, and he’d reply, “Just sticking with the stuff brother or sister”. ref: 1 Samuel 25:13 (and two hundred abode by the stuff.)
John 1:41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. (KJV)
- Many people are claiming that the Greek title, Messiah was in the scriptures. It has always been Messias. It is the old English Messias that was translated into the King James, which came via the late Latin and Greek from Hebrew māšīaḥ ‘anointed’. The title Messiah was introduced by the RCC.
John 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. (KJV)
- Many people are claiming that the Greek title, Messiah was in the scriptures. It has always been Messias. It is the old English Messias that was translated into the King James, which came via the late Latin and Greek from Hebrew māšīaḥ ‘anointed’. The title Messiah was introduced by the RCC.
John 10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. (KJV)
- It simply means “His sheep know Him”. Nothing more, nothing less.
Acts 7:42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? (KJV)
- Space means period of time, and has always been in this verse.
Acts 13:21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. (KJV)
- Space means period of time, and has always been in this verse.
1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (KJV)
- I’ve preached many sermons on 1 Corinthians 13 in reference to the spiritual gifts. Charity simply means love towards our fellow man.
James 2:3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
- This has nothing to do with someone who is a Sodomite. Gay meant colorful in the day it was penned by the translators.
1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. (KJV)
- Try just means to test, and was common and proper grammar in the day.
Revelation 1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. (KJV)
- Yes, it was candlesticks instead of lamp stands, and girt about the paps meant wrapped around the chest. There’s nothing wrongly implied, feminizing, or improper about it. This verse has not changed!
Here are some verses that actually have Daniel 7:25 changes in them, but other words are misconstrued as changes also.

John 8:33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? (KJV)
- “We be” was just as common in the day, as “we are” is today. The verse did read “Ye shall be set free” before the change.
